About the Empire Neighborhood

Great historic homes in the Empire Neighborhood.Where to Find Us

The Empire Neighborhood is located on Belleville's oldest quadrant. Bordered on the west by Illinois Street (Hwy 159), on the north by East Washington Street, on the east by South Charles Street and on the south by South Belt (Hwy 13), Belleville's original townsfolk built solid brick homes and cobblestone streets. We are a leisurely walk from Downtown Belleville or the St. Clair County Fairgrounds.

Friendly Neighbors

The Empire Neighborhood is comprised of mostly single-family homes that range from grand and stately manses to German folk houses that step right out onto the sidewalk. It's a common site to see neighbors enjoying evenings on their front porches as they have done for the past two centuries or taking evening strolls.

Educational Opportunities

Home of the world's first Kindergarten, our modern-day kindergarteners attend Washington School or one of several private schools within walking distance. Known for excellent schools who stress character education, Belleville offers both fantastic public and private options. Placing an emphasis on education doesn't stop at high school; Belleville also boasts two colleges within our city limits, Southwestern Illinois College and Lindenwood University.
